WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that enables you to create a website or blog from scratch, or to improve an existing website. WordPress is free and open source software released under the GPL.
It is used by millions of people around the world, including many large organizations, such as The Guardian, Forbes, and The New York Times.
There are two ways to use WordPress: you can install it on your own web server (this article describes how), or you can use one of the many web hosting services that offer WordPress as a pre-installed option.
I recommend using a web hosting service because it’s much easier than installing WordPress yourself and they usually include features like automatic updates and backups.
If you’re not sure which web hosting service to choose, I recommend checking out my article on the best wordpress hosts for 2017 where I compare some of the most popular options.
